The history behind its name
Ti Top Island (or Titov Island) in Ha Long Bay has a rich history that adds to its charm.
In the late nineteenth century, the island was called Cat Nang, which means Sun Sand. But its name changed after an important event in 1962.
That year, President Ho Chi Minh visited the island with Russian cosmonaut Gherman Titov, the second human to orbit the Earth. Titov was amazed by the island’s beauty and the stunning views around it. To mark the visit and strengthen Vietnam-Russia relations, President Ho Chi Minh named the island Titov. Over time, locals called it Ti Top, which was easier to pronounce.
Thirty-five years later, Titov returned and wrote in the island’s memory book, “My deepest thanks to destiny, which has allowed me to come to this tiny island.”
Today, Ti Top Island is not only beautiful but also stands as a symbol of the friendship between Vietnam and Russia during an important time in history.
